You need lots of black items!<br />
<br />
You will need <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Essentials-Regular-Fit-Long-Sleeve-T-Shirt/dp/B07756DPGL/ref=sr_1_1_acs_sk_pb_1_sl_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537524857&sr=8-1-acs&keywords=long+sleeve+black+t+shirt+men">black long sleeve shirts</a> and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Fruit-Loom-Jersey-Sleep-Black/dp/B076XCFYVW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537525057&sr=8-1&keywords=fruit+of+the+loom+mens+black+pants">black pants</a> for each member that will be in the show.<br />
<br />
Hint: for clothing shop yard sales and thrift shops. We just buy black clothing when we see it and eventually it will fit someone.<br />

<br />
For staging you will need lot of black sheets or fabric, black foam core, and/or insulation foam painted black.<br />
<br />
Flat latex paint with a flat sponge roller works great.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgZRLW5tOo09Pg8r6AfsoHy5iL9p6qkp9T5HKdSsyvv-bkBu5oI5anDFx48-4GuVtgwVGGzlzViXAUhL46LR79W-DenpZCAzRfuZYKoPlfefLxrAAY1FySE-y9KRFs0bGYr5Lo7y4frF3N/s1600/Untitled+design.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="527" data-original-width="761" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgZRLW5tOo09Pg8r6AfsoHy5iL9p6qkp9T5HKdSsyvv-bkBu5oI5anDFx48-4GuVtgwVGGzlzViXAUhL46LR79W-DenpZCAzRfuZYKoPlfefLxrAAY1FySE-y9KRFs0bGYr5Lo7y4frF3N/s320/Untitled+design.png" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
You need <a href="http://www.creativemin.com/product/stage_curtain_set/staging">black curtains and staging</a>, I made my own but the fabric is thin and had to be doubled. You could make your own, hang sheets, or use foam boards depending on your needs. See more about my stages <a href="http://www.puppetspace.com/search/label/stages">here. </a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
For the floor you need <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Ottomanson-Ottohome-Collection-Hallway-Non-Slip/dp/B012P2CV9I/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1537525846&sr=8-5&keywords=flat+black+rug">black rugs</a>. We buy ours at Walmart in store, I could not find a link for them. But they need to be non-skid backing, and low pile. You don't want them collecting feathers and lint.<br />
<br />
Pick up some <a href="https://www.walmart.com/search/?query=black%20paint">black paint</a>. You'll use all kinds of paint depending on the project and materials you are painting.<br />
<br />
You will use lots of black things to hide performers, props, puppets and anything you don't want the audience to see.<br />
<br />
Now that we've blacked everything out, next time we will talk about the lighting.<br />
<br />

<br />
I've been leading a black light performance team for over 10 years now. If you want to know more about black light theatre, read my post <a href="http://www.puppetspace.com/2018/11/how-to-begin-black-light-ministry.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
A black light ministry is lot of fun and makes a huge impact on the audience as well as the team. I'm writing this series so that you too can enjoy the fun, creativity and blessings that emerge from a ministry like this.<br />
<br />
Here is what you need to get started.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
First you need PEOPLE.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil0gTc-SKZYv9r6_Et7tz8RhbJnkFkkvLJr8pUe6hzPmsmZdreGXJTa9jvWGkbeg5t0Y3PbwbBJ3DKgufWGRLGG10nVOHg08BZtF2tFy_EjZLBxz3vSMuy1GEpLyR4Gwu9TaTVqTFlyCTc/s1600/You+need+people+to+build+a+team.+%25281%2529.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil0gTc-SKZYv9r6_Et7tz8RhbJnkFkkvLJr8pUe6hzPmsmZdreGXJTa9jvWGkbeg5t0Y3PbwbBJ3DKgufWGRLGG10nVOHg08BZtF2tFy_EjZLBxz3vSMuy1GEpLyR4Gwu9TaTVqTFlyCTc/s640/You+need+people+to+build+a+team.+%25281%2529.png" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
You will need to recruit people to be on the black light team. In our case, this is a ministry so I require that the members be Christians. This is more than putting on a show, it's part of being a discipleship team and you can't be a disciple until you are a Christian. (If you'd like to know more about becoming a Christian you may contact me through my contact button or leave a comment. I would love to talk and pray with you.)<br />
<br />
Our team consists of students who are in 6th grade or above. You can go younger if you like and even have adults. Your team dynamic is up to you but this is what works for us. I wouldn't recommend going younger than 6th grade because this is taxing work at times and they need to have some maturity to handle it. Even the older kids have a hard time sometimes.<br />
<br />
I have had teams as few as 8 and as many as my current team of 19 members. More members can mean more challenges, but it is doable with a lot of planning.<br />
<br />
I have an application system that the kids fill out before becoming a member. Don't be surprised if some quit after a while when they find out there is more work involved than they thought. After years of experience, I can usually tell who will last and who won't from the start but I give them the chance to try. Sometimes, I am pleasantly surprised.<br />
<br />
The application includes a list of what is expected, their testimony, their gifts, talents and interests. A parent signature is also required. Parents must agree because they are transporting the students to and from practice and shows. You may even ask for a reference or two if you don't know the student well. You can see a copy of what our application looks like here.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/a8oe4kissyld756/pit%20crew%20app%20page%201%202016.doc?dl=0" target="_blank">Page 1</a><br />
<a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/9a936so759j2aaa/pit%20crew%20app%20page%202%202016.doc?dl=0" target="_blank">Page 2</a><br />
<a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/mkmsve07133b73a/PIT%20Crew%20Responsibilities.doc?dl=0" target="_blank">Responsibilities</a><br />
<br />
I love reading these applications! It makes them think a little, it's a good exercise for them to think of their faith as their own and not their parents. and it shows me where their interests lie and what skills they already possess.<br />
<br />
Just a little side note from experience, make sure your team members are okay with being completely blacked out, wearing a hood and all black with the lights off, and in tight spaces behind stage. Some students may suffer from anxiety and you need to be sensitive and understanding. Not all who join will be a good fit.<br />
<br />
Now that you have begun recruiting your team, let's move on to the other things you will need to start a black light ministry.</div>

<br />
So, why black light?<br />
<br />
First of all, using black light is just cool. It's so vibrant and colorful. But mostly there are things you can do in black light that you can't get away with in regular lighting situations. Black light can be magic!<br />
<br />
If you want to start a black light ministry you need to understand the principles of black light theatre.<br />
<br />
Black light is UV lighting that reflects white and fluorescent colored items like paint, fabric, poster board and paper.<br />
<br />
The principle of a black light show is to have everything blacked out so that only the colors of the puppets, props or clothing show.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdI5uPFWywTagjcWvFdKUR76nMTByW4Ww-Jj-bK39NwNYznZtdUZBZwp1R6vBUq9u_sggI1sBFFJY9LSPB24Ur-2ApjasTT8aUdFzAHyTyZM65uQRHIucLcFsnCNjJAHO05FloWv7FW99J/s1600/1492588_790864797594193_536818044_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1068" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdI5uPFWywTagjcWvFdKUR76nMTByW4Ww-Jj-bK39NwNYznZtdUZBZwp1R6vBUq9u_sggI1sBFFJY9LSPB24Ur-2ApjasTT8aUdFzAHyTyZM65uQRHIucLcFsnCNjJAHO05FloWv7FW99J/s320/1492588_790864797594193_536818044_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
You can create anything your imagination dreams up for a black light show!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7O_fSnIB5q4z_vmw2C-IugdRcZTuZmhOgtMjDYYV_FPfzAm2_cmWI2_l8pgIdLr2OumRw6_TTSq4ij2DtBizO5uJO3ZSGWCd8Lkp5wLvHhMoKALf3IRR2BKtRx4mUnYughKsV14kL7U7A/s1600/You+can+create+anything+your+imagination+dreams+up+for+a+black+light+show%2521.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7O_fSnIB5q4z_vmw2C-IugdRcZTuZmhOgtMjDYYV_FPfzAm2_cmWI2_l8pgIdLr2OumRw6_TTSq4ij2DtBizO5uJO3ZSGWCd8Lkp5wLvHhMoKALf3IRR2BKtRx4mUnYughKsV14kL7U7A/s320/You+can+create+anything+your+imagination+dreams+up+for+a+black+light+show%2521.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Generally the colors that glow best are white (not all whites glow), neon pink, neon orange, neon green and neon yellow. Occasionally you can find some neon blue and purple but they don't show as bright as the other colors. Since you have a limited color palette you must be creative in how and where you use the colors. I use the term glow loosely. In fact the colors are reflecting the UV lighting, but we like to say they "glow".<br />
<br />
<br />
I'll share in another post, all the things we use to create puppets and props for our shows. But now let's move on to the next in our series, the number one resource.... people!</div>

We needed a way to keep our 4 x 8 foam panels and some staging organized. We use them for our black light shows.<br />
<br />
Before, we had them leaning against the wall which was okay, but getting something from the back made it very difficult.<br />
<br />
There is a man in our church we call Mr. David who can make anything and he often makes it from junk. I told him about our problem and he used some items he had in his shop to make a holder for me. <br />
<br />
It's basically a giant file organizer.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Installing the pipe dividers into the pallet</td></tr>

He used a pallet, some 1/2 inch pipe and a drill to make holes in the pallet for the pipe to fit into. Nothing is permanently attached so we can move it or rearrange it any time.<br />

I made a new puppet over the weekend. She is going to be used in some skits for Wednesday night kids' lessons at church. We use a pre-written skit from a company called <a href="http://highvoltage-kids.com/">High Voltage Kids</a> and this unit calls for a girl named Giddy. Giddy is a little country girl who wants a pony. <br />
<br />
Here she is:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5LSLMrOwzK6qKqTiqsrBvSAUeHpmMmIgYhDITgiQ9DQPuMF5nYPy2zvCFlqPLNgD-GojPxROWOz20V8cD8cFgGteCRCd41xsSylJhs8qQAukWqUm2ESzX9n4jOdV_ils4KlxSpmmT_ULn/s1600/ikidmin+puppetspace+Giddy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5LSLMrOwzK6qKqTiqsrBvSAUeHpmMmIgYhDITgiQ9DQPuMF5nYPy2zvCFlqPLNgD-GojPxROWOz20V8cD8cFgGteCRCd41xsSylJhs8qQAukWqUm2ESzX9n4jOdV_ils4KlxSpmmT_ULn/s1600/ikidmin+puppetspace+Giddy.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I used <a href="http://www.innisanimation.com/puppets/scooter.htm">this shape</a> as a base and adapted it as I went. I wanted to try something different and I like the elongated mouth shape. I think she turned out very cute. She is the first puppet I ever made for myself and I can't wait to use her next week!<br />
<br />
I will use this pattern shape again, but with more modifications. I didn't sew her mouth, it's glued. I prefer to sew, but when I'm working with a new design I sometimes get ahead of myself and forget a step. It may sound silly, but it happens. Just like I never remember to take pictures of the process. One day I will plan the photos and actually remember to take some.<br />
<br />
The best part about this puppet is that I only spent $2.97 on the fleece. Everything else I had already! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
As a puppet maker and crafter I use the hot glue gun often. You would think I would learn not to burn myself and to keep that cup of cold water nearby but I still forget after all these years. And no matter how hard you try, sometimes you still burn yourself on the glue that gushes out and sometimes just the heat coming through the fabric can be very painful.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_dV8-XqvMvQLL_S74eOW6_votM4SK6hIJIkZqFIA8eHyb7lAKb7hj59kRt37I__o4KybFNvY0JZ8rXUsL7R0R7eDJ6WF7idzxza0rpBiuefewZYqGOjL0DVtmNFqQMRoR8tAAwVpxitgj/s1600/A13069b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_dV8-XqvMvQLL_S74eOW6_votM4SK6hIJIkZqFIA8eHyb7lAKb7hj59kRt37I__o4KybFNvY0JZ8rXUsL7R0R7eDJ6WF7idzxza0rpBiuefewZYqGOjL0DVtmNFqQMRoR8tAAwVpxitgj/s1600/A13069b.jpg" height="315" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I found these Thermal Thimbles on clearance at Walmart and immediately saw the potential!<br />
<br />
They are originally for ironing but they are PERFECT for working with the hot glue gun. I've tried them already and they work great. The glue doesn't stick to them, it peels right off.<br />
<br />
I wish I'd known about these years ago!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiimBi4-iWbSjlsGuUTlweR80JrVN73kvcye7lKLNlpF0gPEu-oO2CEYDT-DUu6WiV6lL6hS1dtD9YQyIDnH6Us_VuGVxaOUWVdkOA-qs3u3avPuIJQTuZHRHGF3NKAg0r7cBDmVMwzKpM8/s1600/54ab761eb5d6b52499f770690307a113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiimBi4-iWbSjlsGuUTlweR80JrVN73kvcye7lKLNlpF0gPEu-oO2CEYDT-DUu6WiV6lL6hS1dtD9YQyIDnH6Us_VuGVxaOUWVdkOA-qs3u3avPuIJQTuZHRHGF3NKAg0r7cBDmVMwzKpM8/s1600/54ab761eb5d6b52499f770690307a113.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I purchased mine on clearance but they aren't very expensive at regular price and they are worth every penny. I am grateful for them each time I work with the hot glue gun. They allow me to pinch and put pressure in tight space that in the past I would have used a chop stick or similar tool. I still use a tool like that sometimes, but fingers have the best control and I like to use them when I can.<br />
<br />
Don't hesitate to pick yourself some up next time you are at the store!</div>

Our PIT Crew performed a song last Sunday called "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" but it was set to a 60's girl band sound. Super fun and cute!<br />
<br />
I made everything here except the puppet in the middle. We've had her a long time. :)<br />
<br />
One fun thing I did was on the angel props, if you look closely you can see that the Joseph, Mary, Jesus sign is the same shape as the angel with wings. There is an identical angel on the other side! and on the other side of the angel shown here are two shepherds and a sheep. It was a fun way to keep props at a minimum. 0:)<br />

I started these a month or so ago, but just now finished them up. I'm thinking of adding some details but at least they are ready to practice with!<br />
<br />
I used the <a href="http://www.projectpuppet.com/servlet/-strse-7/The-Melonhead-Puppet-Pattern/Detail">melonhead pattern</a> from <a href="http://projectpuppet.com/">projectpuppet</a> adapted to the size I wanted for the heads, the body pattern is my own and the arms and legs are adapted from a stuffed animal frog I had! <br />
<br />
They glow in black light and well be featured in this year's show. On to the next puppet!<br />

I got these at Hobby Lobby for 40% off:</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSPocL6cMVaR1kjt7B4xN00rkOgDKNy8h_KoN-DkC8WHJExFWxfzWfTBYEzQrxYdVtpxFq8LJnI-5wMZWqmIBKiCquF2qbOdY92RbaKR21jspSTse57gHayA4pXSTvBbplrgGbtr8L3IPu/s1600-h/photo-222.jpg"><img title="photo 2" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="photo 2" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEfZpO94dagEsEyKs8kLVoBiKMC9QxfgSYJ910VlUS0Q0OYkuoKFjNQK8rPlDIlFTbKhmASl2uthyOKnQ3W8FrINFRT1QoJ3toAQ-x9Ju-FnlJ7u5lTAgqJSGlXIGvK0KC6UCRrn2cSfLa/?imgmax=800" width="515" height="386"></a>I will use these to make puppet eyes after sanding and spray painting. I’d had been looking high and low for these and a few friends looking too and no one seemed to have any. I was happy when I found these and bought all they had. I’ll be sure to show how I make eyes from them as soon as I can.</p> <p>Next: The usual suspects. Not on sale but something I buy often:</p> <ul> <li>Neon paint for black light props. I tested them in the store with my trusty mini-black light flash light I carry in my purse. Doesn’t everybody? Now to test them under dark black light conditions for opaqueness. </li> <li>Floral pins. This was a “duh” moment for me the day I realized they would work on sheet insulation foam and ever since that day they have changed my life. Really!</li> <li>Doll joints. I use these in puppet arms and other times I need to join something together.</li></ul> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC7ONk5wHT4bUUORCNLY7aMMiIAuk73Tjkc6ASCqdLre0nz1emHB30bDodphkeHBM7htlAUPFFe7xrgoHlwdkdXunQDyLmIjQE9z68lC7pnDcAuivf0akGfixa1FuSbvesUkcO8PeCTGl1/s1600-h/photo%2525203.jpg"><img title="photo 3" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="photo 3" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsBZuzbkwfBSLAvhz8McYnE9a0VJ_W5tBAkjnLDKE3zapDyYtHTKppqlVujsutw0Uww2ry8rT_W8MVdEiliYppdrdxjIn6woevmLPTVlvVejfXpYqJ0Yo6GmlyUV4cJk9bnPvinuu2VGdG/?imgmax=800" width="515" height="386"></a></p> <p>This is probably the cutest find of the day. A tiny “puppet sized” McDonald’s cup and clip light. Now I just need to write a puppet script where the puppet needs a soda! The clip light is small and would take a night-light sized bulb. I hope it works. </p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzh6fl8KYJ32Kr_o4UspFCmPvTjAj5c3QDbCqj7u6E5fssT9OeiSVvKlXBsqaEzg-izuv7FTJzVNrTwASQy193680BPpFK8hPHDj0fZX6wmc_jdxOVaHwKwCv_MrrnNe7oIQ5Mnr1PdhSr/s1600-h/photo%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="photo" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="photo" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5ZLik7eu9ew8D5Hxpjjr9pKGhlAIOmbeHOdxbe52xbaLabEDCjsiu4jdVrNAxvhRBGqmpZN-fqoI21fDYIU0_lKs44W2C-6ntmI3GOxUFzaedBti93WAS_xzFRX_dW4XFoI0EGelOIbzI/?imgmax=800" width="290" height="386"></a></p> <p>Now I really hope this stapler will do the job. I have a larger heavy-duty staple gun in my travel tool kit and I’m hoping to replace it with this smaller one. It weighs much less and will take up less room. The wire is probably for jewelry making, but I use it for wiring things up in props and puppets when I need, well, to wire something up. <img class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" style="border-top-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-left-style: none" alt="Smile" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoszuRURrIyQQSuyjcfKRFqSwsJo6zNakfx-m7APKWLPNeVAvkYnBUw_f-ZWLRbwLNB1KN3HVjy6rNUtYn5ohBPzZz02jzLe627r0YoXrjXjSrKW236b3b-BpiHSRp4OKhiOYZ-PK9p_51/?imgmax=800"> I got them for $1 each!</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCsjWsP48niDo8ejnj15261CnTSgrlx79MRaag-El-25pusMQljyhPpai3xASOTuVSUIxqwlZZdp-xxpvBpqU6PxR8cNL2Oet50FfoINPXOCuACXipiCQKHcjbfbn_nkkCdjaYL30t18s6/s1600-h/photo%2525204%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="photo 4" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="photo 4" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGBeRNS_Ep__bXHsrNNSOsq1eKYRm6uFsi3fzGiZeP4i1EZY0lHWFDqJEairCTL5_IjbqgDr7ENzNiQVm9S3wEelYiwJrT62I8tgELFDUIniaUhyphenhyphenZGeYCqyloW9PiQP9hT7j6r_gBSPq5_/?imgmax=800" width="290" height="386"></a></p> <p>Now I saved the best for last because this one has a story. A heavy-duty keyboard stand for $0.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA5oIHOt7Pif3AEDC0oW-ldvNaUoQDrbj8jT9vx6qwzlShNq8vCNpm4RBeCu9z129F28NHJyBkniSh-hV7N15_2pKP2JXhOagjuUux7caOzzquy6RWRjjgNEBT62aSkUr3-eRpLH7UfVnp/s1600-h/photo%2525201%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="photo 1" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="photo 1" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj53cjSP1Fir79to7MNTZyz23j4KcjcfqLfN53808MeQ7kdfK_EmKE6VwMWSoD8LBks-EpKY7lI74Zh8pWx-ccBp2hcHvHQZm1-OYZpCSpHzSjzGfT2eL7Nj9a-5k1NE9ka6HdJkKnSeP8u/?imgmax=800" width="515" height="386"></a></p> <p>So here’s the story on the keyboard stand. It was at the first place we stopped. My sister-in-law was with me and we looked around, there was nothing really of interest. I spotted this as we were about to leave and thought, “You know, those are useful, I bet we could always use another one.” </p> <p>So I asked, “How much?” </p> <p>The owner replied, “Make me an offer.” </p> <p>I really wasn’t sure how much it was worth, it was still in the plastic wrapper, although the box was crumpled. So I said, “How about $5?” </p> <p>She said, “Can you do $10?” </p> <p>Which is the first number that I’d though of actually, so I told her yes I could do $10. I asked if we could pick it up when we came back around and she said yes. Then my sister-in-law asks why I wanted it, and I told her I thought it could be useful at church sometime or other. Then my SIL says, “Wait, didn’t you have a keyboard in your black light show?” </p> <p>I said yes, but not this big. Then she proceeds to tell the owner about the show and the puppets I make. She was genuinely interested. She ended up giving me back my $10 saying she wanted to donate to us. What blessing! She really blessed me with her sweet and encouraging attitude. I smiled every time I thought of her and I will be praying for her often. <img class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" style="border-top-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-left-style: none" alt="Smile" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoszuRURrIyQQSuyjcfKRFqSwsJo6zNakfx-m7APKWLPNeVAvkYnBUw_f-ZWLRbwLNB1KN3HVjy6rNUtYn5ohBPzZz02jzLe627r0YoXrjXjSrKW236b3b-BpiHSRp4OKhiOYZ-PK9p_51/?imgmax=800"></p> <p>Blessings aren’t always huge but they are always personal.</p> Angelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07306137189264428446noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-570308264636335250.post-81530954105379327752014-03-19T14:57:00.003-07:002014-03-19T14:57:46.289-07:00Meet Jack Lumber<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

I started almost a year ago on this puppet! I can't believe it's been that long but I finally finished him.<br />
<br />
Let's do a little re-cap shall we? <br />
<br />
<i>(Note: This is not a step-by-step I didn't take enough pictures along the way for that.) </i><br />
<br />
I sketched out the basic shape and idea of the head and mouth. And cut it out of foam.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Q4PHUsa-Ecr1qrOmeBTzQIQmUjfF_f4i4Ral-rQyw0_aY57INzCX0z-17C-rC3d6FNnf7epaxcS6gDdsyYTXEfIOeUNrgasn0nixvyGNnayWA8eWbC_pP5R2IjbjfnrvUuWDOFD8YHpv/s1600/00+rabbit+puppet+bunny+puppet+head+sketch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Q4PHUsa-Ecr1qrOmeBTzQIQmUjfF_f4i4Ral-rQyw0_aY57INzCX0z-17C-rC3d6FNnf7epaxcS6gDdsyYTXEfIOeUNrgasn0nixvyGNnayWA8eWbC_pP5R2IjbjfnrvUuWDOFD8YHpv/s1600/00+rabbit+puppet+bunny+puppet+head+sketch.jpg" height="276" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Glued and pinned all the foam together and it looked like this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqWJdDUq8O43R7VB3f6yZBdsuJPwLmKeBqX18xO6lgWw0CdhEchYktUQ55yaKd1pyFgQcKHquiCFFoFAtrM33w4iOgR6RE1deUAgWP_cJ9QDXvQRGtauIo_qd5nF0REznStUQegQr_gQTB/s1600/01+rabbit+puppet+bunny+puppet+head+uncovered.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqWJdDUq8O43R7VB3f6yZBdsuJPwLmKeBqX18xO6lgWw0CdhEchYktUQ55yaKd1pyFgQcKHquiCFFoFAtrM33w4iOgR6RE1deUAgWP_cJ9QDXvQRGtauIo_qd5nF0REznStUQegQr_gQTB/s1600/01+rabbit+puppet+bunny+puppet+head+uncovered.jpg" height="320" width="257" /></a></div>
<br />
I cut out and glued together the body.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilts42rgJ454aR40osk4GGBC_rEXizBbfFqvipXx-EkGgmy7-8R5ULiRDKXU0B4yy8xB4vBeY0vslSaje1nzACMoU-AgOyv8Qix_df4EEWx33cO5hgtfX8u64qOpPJNWgQ-aX7do_UNayO/s1600/02+bunny+rabbit+body.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilts42rgJ454aR40osk4GGBC_rEXizBbfFqvipXx-EkGgmy7-8R5ULiRDKXU0B4yy8xB4vBeY0vslSaje1nzACMoU-AgOyv8Qix_df4EEWx33cO5hgtfX8u64qOpPJNWgQ-aX7do_UNayO/s1600/02+bunny+rabbit+body.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I covered the head with antron fleece and added the eyes (purchased at <a href="http://creativemin.com/">creativemin.com</a>, nose (just a pom pom ball), ear lining (polar fleece) and teeth (made of craft foam).</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLB5ZE62N0OyaYMMTRnC0uf9Oj7RlK7aJYhQbyUMIU8T-CEqq7FQpXzdK57uoFJ4vD4BSp-5PglrwIdvHFKoKI5_gAqqpycaEWDnub80Zk8F8FyWjESu5vorqwTU_p128BWawudYimNaVm/s1600/04+rabbit+puppet+bunny+puppet+head+covered+.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLB5ZE62N0OyaYMMTRnC0uf9Oj7RlK7aJYhQbyUMIU8T-CEqq7FQpXzdK57uoFJ4vD4BSp-5PglrwIdvHFKoKI5_gAqqpycaEWDnub80Zk8F8FyWjESu5vorqwTU_p128BWawudYimNaVm/s1600/04+rabbit+puppet+bunny+puppet+head+covered+.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Head with covering a some features</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Then I cut out the body covering from the antron fleece and cut the lining from an old t-shirt! Don't worry, the lining will never show. ;)<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Body cover and lining.</td></tr>

Here he is looking cute and almost done. Still needs whiskers, but his personality is starting to emerge!<br />

Ever need just the right prop to fill in that space in a song or skit? The first place to go is the dollar store of course! Sometimes you find a toy, or yard decoration that will work perfectly! But honestly for me, it is rare that I find just what I'm looking for. Usually I have to make my own prop. But again the dollar store is the first place to look for materials, then I move up to "that large discount store" or hobby and fabric stores.<br />
<br />
Today the materials I'm using came from the Dollar Tree. I'm wanting a butterfly for my "love" song that I'm planning for the Valentine Banquet coming up and wouldn't it have been great to find one of those large butterflies they usually have around spring time in the dollar stores? But it's not spring, it's still winter and even though I could see they were clearing out and making room for spring items, they didn't have any yard decorations yet. So I picked up some craft foam to make my own.<br />
<br />
After purchasing my craft foam at Dollar Tree and opening the package I was a little disappointed at the thinness of the sheets, but as you'll see at the end of this post, it actually worked out!<br />
<br />
Supplies Needed:<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Computer</li>
<li>Scrap Paper</li>
<li>Pencil</li>
<li>Craft foam</li>
<li>Scissors</li>
<li>White glue</li>
<li>Cotton swabs</li>
<li>Coat hanger or heavy wire</li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<br />
First start with a pattern. I usually use clip art or coloring pages as a start if I can't draw my own. And in this case I used clip art. I just pulled it right up on my computer screen.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgEDB4gCFNTsTMM1II5HZrhqRoYXsml-3HYgPeZ_DvngaiYdun-8mN3FWUEy5o5MjYkD8FYi66iymmXf4BLZ0rJi1GKmnwFQ6vhVYsp6cgE79Fji2c4ClI4mF7u61ET-adUZYA1ja4IJXw/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgEDB4gCFNTsTMM1II5HZrhqRoYXsml-3HYgPeZ_DvngaiYdun-8mN3FWUEy5o5MjYkD8FYi66iymmXf4BLZ0rJi1GKmnwFQ6vhVYsp6cgE79Fji2c4ClI4mF7u61ET-adUZYA1ja4IJXw/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+1.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then lightly trace it with a pencil. You don't want to scratch or puncture your computer screen so be careful. Now, I realize you could just print it out if you'd like but I was out of ink for my printer, plus I can resize it easily and just trace it right onto some scrap paper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ-X_BT-HWsc03CpP_ZGDGesSOq1XkK4tp0C_3k_QA9ke7rwzuVo9y-wNqp1UAEq7swQoXcuY84IW6JxlCtbHOBx78EQb82ccmsbcxclL9Z5dyFZZxWW1A7pyq0Z1VIFB5wT-dFx3HJRaB/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+1a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ-X_BT-HWsc03CpP_ZGDGesSOq1XkK4tp0C_3k_QA9ke7rwzuVo9y-wNqp1UAEq7swQoXcuY84IW6JxlCtbHOBx78EQb82ccmsbcxclL9Z5dyFZZxWW1A7pyq0Z1VIFB5wT-dFx3HJRaB/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+1a.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Next I cut out all the pattern pieces and labeled them so that I wouldn't get confused when putting the prop together later. Then I laid the pattern on the foam, traced it and cut it out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1j4EU5Y1sxlxUO2tsx_iTPmwHzOWncS0kplrkxjP_89PC52PFCxP-zZX2Kp_3RgJoGgkB4c_qYCAlH3Aem1n9RT3VFOvAdrC84S7OEuxMS0zjua4BHiA-Ab9LdUzk5cq6E42tgUNpWDKA/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1j4EU5Y1sxlxUO2tsx_iTPmwHzOWncS0kplrkxjP_89PC52PFCxP-zZX2Kp_3RgJoGgkB4c_qYCAlH3Aem1n9RT3VFOvAdrC84S7OEuxMS0zjua4BHiA-Ab9LdUzk5cq6E42tgUNpWDKA/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+2.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Cut two of everything. Make sure you add a little tab on the wings where it will attach to the body. You'll see this tab on the wings in a minute when we get ready to glue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBaNVrl70dTjs6j9UMPNmv2JbWG4tv4jp35NVvIr5B4n76Jlc_F95VTF7KF-QU1v29NNbWo3wS_5kj0VBneL2ZkTL6LI4BYEqzEcqg22NB8xjD0BFMDF8AQWqBmjOoOjRnR5k7eJcz1V5M/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBaNVrl70dTjs6j9UMPNmv2JbWG4tv4jp35NVvIr5B4n76Jlc_F95VTF7KF-QU1v29NNbWo3wS_5kj0VBneL2ZkTL6LI4BYEqzEcqg22NB8xjD0BFMDF8AQWqBmjOoOjRnR5k7eJcz1V5M/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+3.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I chose yellow for the wings, pink for the accents and green for the body of the butterfly.<br />
For the body, I didn't cut two rather I cut one on the fold. That is going to eventually be folded down the middle lengthwise and glued together to hold the wings in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCK0GznUR94Ozt-OJ6h5IqO_nJrMx7YtBgcXWgDoUH44VZiXLKtiEXjsHv279fGQJWv1Cuqmbs68YiZlGDZKVGHMli98N1Uxna_BR2R5EBT_gUZCBih56gPO0wf3mCNBBL3Rh7PU9hF-qH/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+08.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCK0GznUR94Ozt-OJ6h5IqO_nJrMx7YtBgcXWgDoUH44VZiXLKtiEXjsHv279fGQJWv1Cuqmbs68YiZlGDZKVGHMli98N1Uxna_BR2R5EBT_gUZCBih56gPO0wf3mCNBBL3Rh7PU9hF-qH/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+08.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Lay out the wings and you are ready to begin working on the placement of the accent pieces.<br />
(Note the "tab" in the center of the wings to use for gluing on the body later)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhinZ7T81Oq5Jvg6M-lpXlM8xoJJyVe8oBCtDeMDkpemH1uSdHSBx1DUaZpZ5cOXlG7O42hBuWmIsPwvEsmegCyBJs6JdIIVYhMRriY7CsHK8TFP7tYHblOlJA2a7DTQ_gH2L0dTxw61dz6/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+3a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhinZ7T81Oq5Jvg6M-lpXlM8xoJJyVe8oBCtDeMDkpemH1uSdHSBx1DUaZpZ5cOXlG7O42hBuWmIsPwvEsmegCyBJs6JdIIVYhMRriY7CsHK8TFP7tYHblOlJA2a7DTQ_gH2L0dTxw61dz6/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+3a.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I didn't have any foam glue. No worries, school glue will work. You just have to give it time to dry. I used a cotton swab for application, but a small paintbrush or your finger would work. The key is to just use a thin layer of glue from edge to edge. There is no stress on this part of the butterfly so just a little glue does the trick.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJSvOnvTIS02cy5uDsgMIgG21vwna2_UbQIzxW5m89PWoMlCnPs1dDnBs0rckRIYvIAPyiDK_-b4od62WRput4ySB30hf93SDXQEGk0xQVb9uTKlp5Zs44JW9kgupnOIdj7NYo5aEFfghR/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJSvOnvTIS02cy5uDsgMIgG21vwna2_UbQIzxW5m89PWoMlCnPs1dDnBs0rckRIYvIAPyiDK_-b4od62WRput4ySB30hf93SDXQEGk0xQVb9uTKlp5Zs44JW9kgupnOIdj7NYo5aEFfghR/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+5.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Glue all the pieces on one side, let dry and glue the other side matching placement. Let dry. Now we are ready to add the body. Apply a thin layer of glue on the<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizYjBwXL39qA9m6czds_1HY36pPFY81bMF2vJxTxeLLBW4m6OAqH2tKhbQgXLW1QCi9OZlDpocAKNQ-wVbb9ebioiP6mLfwL15Rncs76nGOyMJplHoHrwge_l-BdsKouF5u3egIDHIy3F1/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizYjBwXL39qA9m6czds_1HY36pPFY81bMF2vJxTxeLLBW4m6OAqH2tKhbQgXLW1QCi9OZlDpocAKNQ-wVbb9ebioiP6mLfwL15Rncs76nGOyMJplHoHrwge_l-BdsKouF5u3egIDHIy3F1/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+7.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Now we are ready to connect the wings to the body. IMPORTANT: Do not glue the wings inside yet!<br />
We still need to glue the wire inside. Right now we are only putting glue on the outside of the wings where it will connect to the body. Fold the body in half and glue onto the wings.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkadGHvyENWdS5zeaPCJMSqsBR5A6uMNvkkXx4qahOmz4n167icxdD9AnEcHFZGMyLtP0MkdDJcp1wtd9ISVWx_KZQUlt0SK97PGn9w_cqkleOfNeauyC0vxcG1iLX44K1kIjjVXpy8MPC/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+09.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkadGHvyENWdS5zeaPCJMSqsBR5A6uMNvkkXx4qahOmz4n167icxdD9AnEcHFZGMyLtP0MkdDJcp1wtd9ISVWx_KZQUlt0SK97PGn9w_cqkleOfNeauyC0vxcG1iLX44K1kIjjVXpy8MPC/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+09.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Set something kind of heavy on it to keep it folded while it dries. Here I used the glue bottle and my water cup. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcI5Ycvnx2tCILT05jzu6Ozu7I6h41BN66w3ZjRdQnwucjildWLLV73zwrX2isY69peF__kQ0_cePYuZX_ccq9mZQJc-SX0toGTb_WowolLoXBm4ofZTdhmigV6LvksjAOR2bMdItb1TSR/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcI5Ycvnx2tCILT05jzu6Ozu7I6h41BN66w3ZjRdQnwucjildWLLV73zwrX2isY69peF__kQ0_cePYuZX_ccq9mZQJc-SX0toGTb_WowolLoXBm4ofZTdhmigV6LvksjAOR2bMdItb1TSR/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+10.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Now we are ready to attach the wire. I just used a wire coat hanger, cut it apart, straightened it into a long stick then bent one end into this shape with pliers.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho0GoqPngCBycezU2pNcXQTWGuIAJnIebVrufthaHApkDlJi_JsDzdTSParEwBxADjHR45tKIC2jQkuKaXI5Llru8zg9codS6oVBlOr8eu5EQwJNOi4Q4AQU1jRck751yK5RPXwXjgDscr/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+11.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho0GoqPngCBycezU2pNcXQTWGuIAJnIebVrufthaHApkDlJi_JsDzdTSParEwBxADjHR45tKIC2jQkuKaXI5Llru8zg9codS6oVBlOr8eu5EQwJNOi4Q4AQU1jRck751yK5RPXwXjgDscr/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+11.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Now open up the wings after the glue has dried on the body. Apply lots of glue inside and insert the bent area of the wire.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz10PfnvXEPJEQM4sj9lP-Kpu26GUAgUKZM-5BUa0LQQkQ4XOYEGVwA4ggbMvZvpgvBWvw7ELX-DQ73Uq7gtWsDexaoLsd_sM1yLtoXgxt8rD2nE4NAMsq9MIxR0PSL8okeO6UjCSb7BXw/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz10PfnvXEPJEQM4sj9lP-Kpu26GUAgUKZM-5BUa0LQQkQ4XOYEGVwA4ggbMvZvpgvBWvw7ELX-DQ73Uq7gtWsDexaoLsd_sM1yLtoXgxt8rD2nE4NAMsq9MIxR0PSL8okeO6UjCSb7BXw/s1600/butterfly+make+your+own+props+12.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Apply as much glue as necessary and fold the body closed over the wire. Let dry. And that's it!<br />

I'm currently in planning mode and thought I would share a bit of the process I use to choose, plan and produce a number.<br />
<br />
It begins with a lot of prayer actually. I am in constant prayer and asking God for direction, inspiration and a message/reason for the show or song.<br />
<br />
Sometimes a song comes on the radio and I just see it "puppetized" in my mind. Sometimes I have to work a little harder. I almost always have to work a little harder. :) I think God doesn't want me to ever take this ministry for granted .<br />
<br />
Right now I have several projects and performance ideas in my head but I'll focus on just one song I'm working on right now.<br />
<br />
1. Purpose/Venue<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Annual Valentine Fund Raiser Banquet at church. We need entertainment for the banquet and our puppet team, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/PITCrewPuppets">PIT Crew</a>, is always a big hit. </li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
2. Message & Style<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Naturally, I look for a song about "love" since it's Valentine's Day. I have several <a href="http://www.creativemin.com/category/righteous_pop_music">Righteous Pop M</a>usic albums and decide to look there first because they are familiar tunes to the audience and they keep it a little light for using puppetry to music. I chose "Put the Love of God in Your Heart" from <a href="http://www.creativemin.com/product/342/righteous_pop_music">RPM Vol. 4</a></li>
</ul>
<br />
3. Theme or "look" of the song:<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>I decide after getting some inspiration from another puppet team to go with flowers, shrubs, animals etc. as the setting for the song.</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. Props & Puppets:</div>
<div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>The lead singer is a female, and I am going to use this puppet for the singer. She'll need a new dress (she's currently wearing a peasant dress from VBS ;)) and maybe some ribbons for her hair. </li>
</ul>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1FVLSJQ0HFTXiQeibrvCfAyMpdKY9VLneLozcL2-d_DTN4PuG6gqvPZhY5vsbjmoMLOeXZGQ6J6obl6PdTUWZ-o8i7fxsY-6TH2LU_plT7CIp8LORT6eDgsNMx8wDLO7y4k9DXVhAzACN/s1600/girl+puppet+june+2013.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1FVLSJQ0HFTXiQeibrvCfAyMpdKY9VLneLozcL2-d_DTN4PuG6gqvPZhY5vsbjmoMLOeXZGQ6J6obl6PdTUWZ-o8i7fxsY-6TH2LU_plT7CIp8LORT6eDgsNMx8wDLO7y4k9DXVhAzACN/s400/girl+puppet+june+2013.png" height="400" width="254" /></a></div>
<div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>I am going to use the <a href="http://www.puppetspace.com/2013/12/rabbit-puppet-update.html">bunny puppet</a> I'm working on, and a flower puppet we have (I may make another one) as well as any other animal or nature type puppets I have. It's time to do a little digging in the Rubbermaid tubs and a lot of painting and foam core cutting!</li>
</ul>
<div>
5. Choreographing the number:</div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>I use an excel file to add the lyrics, prop list and make a column to add the entrance/exits, choreography instructions etc. This is very helpful from practice to practice so we don't forget what we did! I print the sheet out and make any changes with pen. Sometimes, when I remember, I go back and add the changes to the file so that if we use the song again we will remember it with the changes and additions and we can print out a clean copy.</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's what the file might look like, this one's still in the works:</div>
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5THy-cbcHOTSzWuDmlGHTTnn7F_vOA1lT0lvtnUlpQOkoUVbpUgrYwkpOaU8PU_hA-R9jDufZ4g0OUMxrbP76D34Txcjt3aA2k_Oo7DMQAWdUWY7Y5VdGNgf1Anffpbaci3eFWzAWtSv7/s1600/puppet+song+planning+post.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5THy-cbcHOTSzWuDmlGHTTnn7F_vOA1lT0lvtnUlpQOkoUVbpUgrYwkpOaU8PU_hA-R9jDufZ4g0OUMxrbP76D34Txcjt3aA2k_Oo7DMQAWdUWY7Y5VdGNgf1Anffpbaci3eFWzAWtSv7/s400/puppet+song+planning+post.png" height="238" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When it's done, all entrances and dancing moves will have been named and written down in the file.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. Practice</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Next comes actually working with the team to make sure what I want to do can actually be done! This often results in change. :) You have to be willing to make adjustments or even ditch something entirely. I always go for simple and excellent rather than complicated and a mess. Know what I mean?</li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. Perform</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>After all the planning, prop making, and practice then we are ready to perform the number. There are several smaller steps in between all of this but this is the basic formula. And once a year we do a complete show with scripts and songs all strung together. This one is just one song. I'm still pondering adding a skit. But I'm not sure yet. </li>
</ul>
These are the basic steps I go through in planning a puppet performance. I hope this helps you plan a performance for your team! </div>

We have an annual Valentine banquet as a fund raiser for kids to attend pre-teen camp and we are going to need a little entertainment. So I started planning a song for our puppet team, the PIT Crew, to perform.<br />
<br />
I'm planning to use a song called "Put the Love of God in Your Heart". It's a parody of "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" from <a href="http://www.creativemin.com/product/342/righteous_pop_music">Creative Ministries RPM collection</a>.<br />
<br />
I decided to keep it simple with the props and just a few puppets. The new <a href="http://www.puppetspace.com/2013/12/rabbit-puppet-update.html">bunny</a> will definitely be involved!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have to have a Jesus in a heart prop, naturally...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28325265@N03/11558539383/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="jesus heart prop"><img alt="jesus heart prop" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2834/11558539383_9079cf8df6.jpg" height="351" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the heart with the first coat of red paint on the outside...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28325265@N03/11558475374/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="heart paint drying"><img alt="heart paint drying" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7445/11558475374_ee9371cc63.jpg" height="344" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It doesn't seem to show up in the picture but there is a hinge of tape in the middle so the heart can open up and you'll see Jesus inside.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a shrub I just cut out with an x-acto knife...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28325265@N03/11558447794/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="cutting out shrub 1"><img alt="cutting out shrub 1" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7355/11558447794_93ed1de70d.jpg" height="400" width="384" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a close up of the shrub. Not sure why I drew all the details because when I put the base coat on, they will disappear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28325265@N03/11558563813/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="close up of shrub"><img alt="close up of shrub" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7372/11558563813_d161972d5e.jpg" height="299" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I'll post new pictures when they are all done. I love making things with items I already have and so far these are made with leftovers from previous projects. :)<br />
<br />

I finally got his head covered!<br />
<br />
Sometimes a puppet comes together quickly, as in the case of the <a href="http://www.puppetspace.com/2013/06/lion-puppet-in-worksvbs-2013.html">lion</a>. But with this rabbit puppet that hasn't been the case.<br />
<br />
I just needed time to decide the "look" of him. Here's what I have so far:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28325265@N03/11315192935/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="white rabbit head"><img alt="white rabbit head" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3697/11315192935_3000afe34f.jpg" height="500" width="362" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
He still needs whiskers, a body and arms. Soon! (I hope)<br />

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
I started a new blog over at <a href="http://ikidmin.blogspot.com/">iKidmin.blogspot.com</a> and it has inspired me to blog more here at <a href="http://puppetspace.com/">puppetspace.com</a>. I don't know why I have struggled with this blog. I think it's because I couldn't find just exactly what I wanted to say and show here.<br />
<br />
I'm just going to blog about anything puppet related that I think, do or see. :) After all, the blogs are really for me to journal what I do and what I learn along the way. If it helps somebody else well then I'll be doubly blessed.<br />
<br />
This week I was doing some organizing and cleaning behind the stage in our children's dept at my church and came up with a simple solution for our small signs.<br />
<br />
I took some paper clips and duct tape and taped the clips at the end of the paddles, then I put hooks back stage and hung the signs on the hooks. Fast.Simple.Cheap.Easy.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28325265@N03/11472910194/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="adding paperclips to signs"><img alt="adding paperclips to signs" height="400" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3780/11472910194_502b731d5f.jpg" width="339" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28325265@N03/11473043583/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="sticks with paperclips"><img alt="sticks with paperclips" height="200" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3806/11473043583_b9a7b92088.jpg" width="169" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28325265@N03/11456409726/" title="hooks 2"><img alt="hooks 2" height="299" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3694/11456409726_4d9cd4f55e.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28325265@N03/11456363494/" title="hooks backstage by angelinep, on Flickr"><img alt="hooks backstage" height="299" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3667/11456363494_5ec5e3c21b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The signs themselves are just clip art enlarged, printed on our color printer, laminated then mounted to foam core board trimmed to fit. They are then taped onto paint stir paddles that are spray painted black. Again fast.Simple.Cheap.Easy</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I made this puppet a few years ago, but we haven't really used him since. His head is just a <i>little</i> too pointy. :)<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYdQmEwlUfHcF87Rl7qxpefihnu09vDfEdWOg6ZVHhQL-Tecqv87ZoHBZhRV4g3aYO9Uh71OxUoyBYH1tsJrxUakhtRVCD_rzuHsw-SGGlU2Q9y2JZ27uIjOELUIOEpc_K4F-YOsql_csA/s1600/brown+puppet+choir+puppet.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYdQmEwlUfHcF87Rl7qxpefihnu09vDfEdWOg6ZVHhQL-Tecqv87ZoHBZhRV4g3aYO9Uh71OxUoyBYH1tsJrxUakhtRVCD_rzuHsw-SGGlU2Q9y2JZ27uIjOELUIOEpc_K4F-YOsql_csA/s320/brown+puppet+choir+puppet.png" width="131" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">puppet before</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I had taken his body to add to another puppet when I was in a hurry and low on foam. So he only had a head and arms left. :(<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
We needed a character to sing a song in children's church soooo.... I made a new body, put his arms back on, trimmed the top of his head (OUCH!) and sewed it back up, made him a new costume with some scraps and viola!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />

He's partially done. Needs a few touch ups and a mane! I have the perfect yarn in mind for the mane but I'll have to take a trip to Wal-mart to pick it up. <br />

He'll be cousin, or nephew to "Sir Valiant" one of <a href="http://www.group.com/vbs/kingdom-rock">Group's VBS </a>characters.</div>

<br />
Mane in process...<br />
This is the yarn I wanted for the mane:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This is one skein of yarn, partially "curled". It looks like it might take that second skein. I'd like it to be fuller. It will also make him heavier! The puppeteer will need to be experienced and "muscled up".<br />

I'm in the process of making a rabbit puppet.<br />
<br />
Nothing is glued yet except for the edges of the head, the ears have wire running around the edge to give them shape. I'm not sure about that nose yet, I was just using some things I had to get an idea of how he will look.<br />
<br />
I debated on colors and my kids helped me decide he would be a white rabbit. I can't wait to see how he looks all finished and he'll be covered in antron fleece. The inside of his ears will be pink.</div>

<br />
I wanted a scruffy dog and I think he turned out pretty scruffy.<br />
<br />
I do need to work on the fur of his body and he's not really finished, everything is just pinned on.<br />
<br />
His fur is black light reactive.<br />
<br />
He turned out cute if I do say so myself!
<br />
<br />
I actually made a smaller prototype first just to see if my idea would work.<br />
<br />
Here's what the prototype looked like:<br />

<br />
